Künstlerischer Ansatz

Bae Bien-U übt die Kunst der Fotografie seit über vierzig Jahren aus. Er ist heute unbestritten der bedeutendste zeitgenössische koreanische Fotograf. Seine weltweit anerkannten Werke sprechen eine universelle Sprache und spiegeln vor allem das Bestreben des koreanischen Volkes wider, in Harmonie mit der Natur zu leben, deren Bewegung Bae Bien-U im Panoramamodus fotografiert. Seine Landschaften sind frei von jeglicher menschlicher Spur und versetzen den Geist in einen meditativen Schwebezustand. Das Werk ist eine Einladung, mit der natürlichen Umgebung zu kommunizieren, und gleichzeitig eine Metapher, in der der Baum – diese Verbindung zwischen Himmel und Erde, wie der Künstler sie gerne betrachtet – durchaus wir selbst sein könnten.

Die Fotografie von Bae Bien-U ist nicht das Zeugnis eines bestimmten Augenblicks oder eines besonderen Ereignisses, sondern ein „Fänger eines Geistes“, der mythische Orte hervorruft und ihre Lebensenergie wiedergibt. Durch die Verwendung von Schwarz und Weiß und den engen Bildausschnitt ist das Motiv nicht erkennbar. Der Fotograf verwischt die Spuren. Malerei oder Fotografie? Ein Stil, der den Künstler mit der malerischen Praxis seiner jungen Jahre in Verbindung bringt. Auf die Frage nach Künstlern, die ihn hätten inspirieren können, antwortet er mit dem Verweis auf die amerikanische Fotografengruppe f/64, die sich seit 1932 für eine von der bereits existierenden Grafik unabhängige fotografische Form einsetzte, und auch auf die Malerei von Jeong Seon (1676-1759), einem koreanischen Maler, der dafür bekannt ist, einen von der chinesischen Tradition getrennten Stil entwickelt zu haben.

1985 begann eine Arbeit, in der er die Heiligkeit der Kiefernwälder an der südkoreanischen Küste festhielt. Er bezeichnete diese Bäume als „Symbole der Seele des koreanischen Volkes“. Kein Wunder also, dass sich Bae Bien-U rund 30 Jahre später, als er an der Côte d’Azur Urlaub machte, für ihre mediterranen Brüder interessierte.

Bae Bien-U gehört zu den Künstlern, die der Domaine von Chaumont-sur-Loire treu geblieben sind. 2014 entdeckten die Besucher wunderschöne Schwarz-Weiß-Panoramaabzüge von Pins de Gyeongju, 2019-2020 folgten Orums, Bilder von Vulkanhügeln, die wie abstrakte Gemälde anmuten. In diesem Jahr werden andere Stimmungen gezeigt, weite Horizonte, die dem Auge des Besuchers einen neuen Wind bieten. Man bleibt lange fasziniert von den nebelverhangenen Hügeln oder den traumhaften, schwebenden hellen Gräsern.

Bae Bien-U wurde 1950 im südkoreanischen Yeosu geboren. Er erwarb einen Studienabschluss in traditioneller Malerei und Design an der Hongik-Universität in Seoul, bevor er sich in den 1970-er Jahren der Fotografie zuwandte, als diese in Korea noch nicht als Kunstgattung anerkannt war. Neben seiner fotografischen Tätigkeit war er von 1981 bis 2012 auch als Lehrer tätig, unter anderem am Seoul Institute of the Arts. Ein Forschungsstipendium brachte ihn 1988-1989 nach Deutschland an den Fachbereich für Fotografie und Design der Hochschule für angewandte Wissenschaften Bielefeld. Seine schwarz-weiße, menschenleere Silberfotografie machte ihn weit über die Grenzen seines Heimatlandes hinaus bekannt. Seine Verbundenheit mit dieser Technik und seine Aufmerksamkeit für die Abzüge haben nie nachgelassen. Bae Bien-U gilt als der bedeutendste zeitgenössische koreanische Fotograf.

Er wird von der Galerie RX in Paris und der Galerie Axel Vervoordt in Wijnegem, Belgien, vertreten.
