Der Künstler und Pilot Alex MacLean fotografiert seit vielen Jahren die Veränderung der amerikanischen Landschaften und prangert unermüdlich zahlreiche „ökologische Absurditäten“ an, die für unsere Zeit kennzeichnend sind.

Er will das herausstellen, was man nicht sehen kann oder will, „das, was man ansieht, ohne zu verstehen, und vor allem die Zusammenhänge, welche die Räume zwischen Natur und Stadt beherrschen“. Seine Bilder zeigen „die Wirkungen der Zeit, die geologischen Bewegungen, die veränderlichen Systeme der Landschaftsgrenzen, verstreuten Siedlungen, der Umschichtung, des Vordringens von Flächen und Aktivitäten“.

Außerdem zeigt er dabei stets die Verletzungen der Erde, die durch die Industrie und die allmähliche Zerstörung wunderschöner Landschaften verunstaltet wird.

Seine paradoxerweise bildschönen Bilder zeigen einige unverantwortliche Exzesse der Tätigkeit des Menschen: Steinbrüche oder Erdölfelder, deren Maßlosigkeit und Gefahren in den Luftaufnahmen des Fotografen überdeutlich herausgestellt werden.

Alex MacLean lebt in Lincoln (Massachusetts) und arbeitet in Cambridge in den Vereinigten Staaten. Seine Werke werden in den Vereinigten Staaten, in Kanada, Europa und Asien ausgestellt. Man findet sie in öffentlichen und privaten Sammlungen oder auch in Universitäten.

Der Pilot und Fotograf Alex MacLean steht in der großen Tradition der Luftaufnahmen. Aber er versucht weniger, die Schönheit der Landschaft zu zeigen, als eher die Geschichte und die Veränderung der Gegenden, die er fotografiert, wiederzugeben. Der Künstler zeigt die Verlagerungen, Neuordnungen des Raums, die Auswirkungen der Zeit, die Raumordnungen, die Blöcke bilden, die Grenzen und Zwischenräume auf.
