Approccio artistico

Le sculture massicce di Ursula von Rydingsvard rivelano la traccia della mano umana e assomigliano a tazze in legno, utensili e pareti che sembrano fare eco al patrimonio familiare dell’artista nella Polonia preindustriale prima della Seconda Guerra mondiale. L’artista ha trascorso la propria infanzia nei campi nazisti e nei campi di profughi del dopoguerra. I suoi primi ricordi dolorosi ispirano il suo lavoro carico di una grande potenza emotiva.

Ursula von Rydingsvard costruisce alte strutture di cedro, creando una rete complessa di singole travi, sagomata mediante tagli affiliati e lirici, quindi assemblate assieme onde formare superfici sensuali, puzzle-like...

Ha ricevuto numerosi premi tra cui il premio Joan Mitchell (1997), un Oscar dell’Accademia Americano delle Arti e delle Lettere (1994), borse della Fondazione John Simon Guggenheim (1983) e del National Endowment for the Arts (1979, 1986). Ha ricevuto il premio dell’Associazione internazionale dei critici d’arte (1992, 2000).

Ha esposto le proprie opere presso il Madison Square Park, New York (2006), il museo Neuberger, l’Università dello Stato di New York (2002) e presso il Storm King Art Center (1992). Vive e lavora a New York.

Ursula VON RYDINGSVARD
GERMANIA

Ursula von Rydingsvard è nata, nel 1942, a Deensen, in Germania. Ha ottenuto un Bachelor in Arts e un Master in Arts dell’Università di Miami, Coral Gables (1965), nonché un Master in Fine Arts dell’Università di Columbia (1975) e un dottorato onorifico del Maryland Institute College of Art, Baltimora (1991).
Scultrice famosa, l’artista lavora a Brooklyn, New York da oltre 30 anni. Dopo il suo diploma dell’Università di Columbia nel 1975, ha iniziato a lavorare con un materiale privilegiato: il cedro.
Ursula von Rydingsvard è soprattutto conosciuta per le sue sculture a grande scala, spesso monumentali, le cui travi sono realizzate con del cedro che ritaglia e assembla, ricoprendole di grafite in polvere. Usa volutamente lastre di cedro frantumate aventi varie lunghezze.
"Queste forme astratte come firme possono essere messe in relazione con cose nel mondo reale, rivelando la traccia della mano umana e invocando forme e forze naturali. Queste forme comprendo tipicamente vasi semplici e tazze. Molte suggeriscono utensili o altri artefatti come pale, cucchiai e recinti, oppure fanno riferimento alle abitazioni primitive, alle formazioni geologiche, al paesaggio o al corpo”.
