Naoya Hatakeyama

"A bird" und "Underground water"

Künstlerischer Ansatz

Die fotografische Arbeit von Naoya Hatakeyama ist eine ständige, strenge Untersuchung der konfliktreichen Beziehungen zwischen Mensch und Natur.

Mit einer breiten Themenspanne widmet er seine ersten Serien den Kalksteinbrüchen (Lime Hills, Japan, 1986-1991). In Underground (1999) erkundet er die unterirdischen städtischen Kanäle von Tokio. Etwa zehn Jahre später kommt er wieder zu seinem bevorzugten Thema zurück, indem er die Kalksteinbrüche im Untergrund von Paris fotografiert (Ciel Tombé, 2007)… Es folgt Blast, eine 1995 begonnene Bildserie, eine spektakuläre Reportage über die Sprengungen in Übertage-Steinbrüchen … Da er von der durch Industrie bedingten Umwandlungen sehr betroffen ist, wird er eingeladen, im Winter 2003 die Kohlebergwerke und Industriebrachen im Rheinland zu fotografieren. Er macht beeindruckende Bilder der Zeche in Westfalen (Zeche Westfalen I/II Ahlen, 2003-2004). Aufgegebene industrielle Anlagen, gesprengte Fabriken … Seine großformatigen Farbbilder begleiten und verwandeln die Landschaft. 2009-2010 fotografiert er die Halden, künstliche Berge aus Schutt im nordfranzösischen Kohlerevier Nord Pas-de-Calais.

2011 wird sein Werk persönlicher. Nach dem Erdbeben und dem Tsunami an der Pazifikküste von Tohoku am 11. März 2011 fotografiert er die Ruinen seiner Geburtsstadt Rikuzentakata, die von der Katastrophe verwüstet wurde. Sein 2013 erschienenes Buch Kensegawa zeigt ein Porträt dieser zerstörten Gegend. Den quälenden Bildern, Bildern des Chaos stellt er andere, einige Jahre zuvor zwischen 2002 und 2010 gemachte Aufnahmen gegenüber, als die Stadt voller Leben war … Für Naoya Hatakeyama ist das Bild eine Stütze der Erinnerung. Es konzentriert die letzten Spuren einer längst vergangenen Zeit.

Die in Chaumont-sur-Loire gezeigten Serien besitzen die Magie des gefährlichen Spiels des Menschen mit der Natur, wobei er die tragischen Folgen seiner stets wiederkehrenden Zerstörungen vergisst. Seine faszinierenden Bilder von mehr als ernster Schönheit fangen den Blick mit Szenen ein, die sonst nicht die Aufmerksamkeit erregen können, und wecken dann ein Gefühl für Umweltbewusstsein.

Naoya Hatakeyama gilt als einer der bedeutendsten japanischen Fotografen unserer Zeit. Er wurde 1958 in Rikuzentakata, Präfektur Iwate, in Japan geboren, er lebt und arbeitet in Tokio. Der Schüler von Kiyoji Otsuji machte sein Diplom an der Kunst- und Design-Schule der Universität Tsukuba (1981-1984).
 
Er beteiligte sich an einer Vielzahl von Einzel- und Gruppenausstellungen. 2001 vertritt er Japan bei der 49. Biennale in Venedig (Ausstellung: Fast and slow. Kurator: Eriko Osaka). Das Tokyo Metropolitan Museum of Photography widmet ihm 2011 eine Einzelausstellung, Naoya Hatakeyama: Natural Stories. 100 Fotografien und zwei Video-Installationen werden dabei gezeigt. Die Ausstellung wird auch im Musée Huis Marseille in Amsterdam (2011) und anschließend im San Francisco Museum of Modern Art (SFMOMA, 2012) gezeigt.
Bei der 13. Architekturbiennale in Venedig (2012) wirkt er mit Toyo Ito an der Ausstellung Architecture. Possible here? Home-for-All mit, einem Projekt, das den Wiederaufbau der Stadt Rikuzentaka zum Thema hat, die 2011 vom Tsunami zerstört wurde. Der japanische Pavillon wird mit dem Goldenen Löwen für den besten nationalen Beitrag ausgezeichnet.
 
Er wird von der Taka Ishii Gallery (Tokio) vertreten.
