Lionel Sabatté

Les Écuries

Artistic approach

Lionel Sabatté’s body of work possesses a strange beauty from which metamorphoses of matter are born. Sculptures, paintings, oxidations on metal plates, installations and drawings all bear witness to a highly original force that seems to cross the ages.

Guided by the energy inherent to all things, Lionel Sabatté has built his work on the use of salvaged materials that still bear the traces of lived experience within them. Like his taxidermist grandfather, he sculpts and models in order to provide things with a second life. Sometimes he shapes animal or anthropomorphic creatures (birds, bears and wolves, as well as unicorns), protagonists in a new mythology, sometimes he makes others appear using chemical oxidation processes, revealing the depth of time in terms of colour. Hence, between intuition and fabulation, his work examines our relationship with living things and the cycles of transformation.

The artist often prefers in situ creation, paying close attention to the dialogue with the space appropriated and the balance of proportions. The work he created for Chaumont-sur-Loire in 2023 is proof enough. Part of the landscape, Chemins croisés [Crossed Paths] acts as a passageway from one world to another, creating a porosity between reality and fiction. For the 2026 Art Season, the artist has returned with one of his most emblematic figures: an owl, especially designed for the Domain and installed beneath the Stables Canopy. Both animal presence and symbol of wisdom, the sculpture seems to rise out of the ground like an ancient being. Silent guardian, it has made its place in this crossing point, a protective apparition inviting the beholder to shift from the real to the imaginary.

BIOGRAPHICAL NOTES

Lionel SABATTÉ
FRANCE

Born in Toulouse in 1975, Lionel Sabatté is a painter, sculptor and draughtsman. Since graduating from the National Higher School of Fine Arts in Paris in 2003, he has been carrying out exemplary artistic work in which transformations of matter, the passage of time and depiction of living things, whether plant, animal or human, play a central role. His research has given rise to sensitive, poetic yet unsettling works, part of an overall reflection on the world and the human condition. What is humankind’s place in the great cycle of life? Such is the question that runs through all his work.
A concern that has not escaped numerous institutions. Hence, in 2011, the National Museum of Natural History in Paris chose to presenter Meute de Loups [Pack of Wolves], dust sculptures, making the installation an emblem of concern about environmental problems. An initiative continued in 2014 by the Paris Aquarium, which requested the artist to draw the public’s attention to the overexploitation of maritime resources. In 2017, Lionel Sabatté was invited to the Museum of Hunting and Nature, where his installation La sélection de parentèle [Kin Selection] focused on living things and evolution.
Other works, such as his great oxidised bronze birds presented in Lyon in 2019 and in Toulouse, and La Paroi des profondeurs [The Wall of the Depths], presented at the MAMC+ in Saint-Étienne in 2021, have led him to redefine his relationship with sculpture and continuously reinvent his artistic practice.

Lionel Sabatté is represented by the Ceysson & Bénétière Gallery.
