Artistic approach
The Chaumont-sur-Loire exhibit is entitled “Wintertime”.
The theme of winter and its “muted colours” is tackled by the artist with the same vision and commitment he extends to cliffs, another of Stéphane Erouane Dumas’ favourite subjects.
Here too, verticality is the order of the day, “frontality” becomes vegetable.
A variation around reflections on water, iced-over lakes, great forests of birch trees and branches frozen by frost or petrified by lichens, this series was born of travels in Northern Europe, in Norway, Scotland and Iceland.
Dilated spaces, vegetable orchestrations undulate before our eyes to the cold colours of winter. “…Stéphane Erouane Dumas’ paintings are the product of an acute awareness of space. It is space that irrigates and conceptualises muted beauties and sets their tempos. Rarely does contemporary painting attempt to reconcile specific, miniscule vegetable fact with so all-encompassing a cosmic vision, the feeling of a lurking far-away force. BIOGRAPHICAL NOTES
Stéphane Erouane DUMAS
FRANCE
Born in Boulogne Billancourt, France, on 12 April 1958.
Trained at the Académie Julian, and then graduated from the National Higher School of Decorative Arts, Paris, in 1984.
Divides his time between Paris and Varengeville-sur-Mer in Normandy.
His works figure in several collections (including the Coprim Foundation, Maison Henry IV and the Colas Foundation). He has also illustrated numerous works for Editions Fata Morgana (Gustave Roud, André Pieyre de Mandiargues, Henry Thomas and Eryck de Rubercy).
In 2012, he created a monumental project for Verrière-Hermès in Brussels entitled “Cliffs”. A polyptych 44 metres long by 3.80 metres high, executed in oils on Canson Montval paper.
In 2014, this gigantic work was then adapted and exhibited at Domaine de Chaumont-sur-Loire in the Fenil Gallery.
The same year, Editions Area published a monograph devoted to his work (240 pages, 190 reproductions).
In 2015, he set out to learn the techniques of lithography at Idem in Montparnasse.
Stéphane Erouane Dumas is regularly invited to present one-man exhibitions of his work in Europe:
- Simoncini Gallery, Luxembourg (2005, 2009, 2012 and 2015)
- Fred Lanzenberg Gallery, Brussels, Belgium (numerous one-man exhibitions since 2000)
- FIAC and ArtBrussels in 2004, and ArtParis in 2016.
