Le jardin de la Belle au Bois Dormant

Thornrose - a garden of thorny delights

The garden

The story of the ‘Sleeping Beauty in the Wood’, filled as it is with dreams and wonder, is at the heart of this garden. “Thornrose” is the garden of prickly delights. On a leisurely stroll through her castle, curiosity leads the princess to prick her finger on the witch’s spinning-wheel. Under a spell, she falls into a deep sleep, from which only true love can awaken her.
The beautiful, the sublime, pleasure and suffering go side by side in a tale which alternates a witch’s fearsome madness with the matchless serenity of a thousand dreams.
Follow the princess through her garden. The forest, the gravel and the dead tree are all obstacles in the path of your quest. A wide wall of roses opens up the way to a world of thorns and wonders, sown with fascinating and disturbing plants.

Urban Armada is a design think tank coordinated by Niels de Bruin and Nevena Krilic  whereby they explore independent urban, architecture and design projects.

Niels de Bruin, is a landscape architect from Sweden specialising in urban design. Niels is talented professional who has won a number of international competitions in a relatively short career, e.g. the transformation of the Southend-on-Sea pleasure pier into a cultural centre in London and the Kristianstad wetland visitor centre in Sweden. Niels tends to incorporate a darker and hidden aspects of culture into his projects as per design of the St Johannesplan city square in Malmö, currently under construction, where a huge dark brick art nouveau pattern is engraved in in-situ concrete. Niels  is a partner of White Arkitekter, Sweden's largest architecture firm.  He also teaches at the Masters Program for Sustainable Urban Design at the School of Architecture in Lund.

Nevena Krilic, is an architect from Toronto, Canada. In 2010 Nevena, received the first prize for The Steedman Travelling Fellowship International Design Competition, issued by The Sam Fox School of Design & Visual Arts, Washington University in St. Louis.  She spent the year 2011 travelling, mostly in Western Europe, doing mapping project of Copenhagen focusing on sustainability as well as documenting contemporary architecture. Much of Nevena's architectural experience was gained at Zeidler, an international architectural practice, with its headquarters in Toronto, where she worked mostly on large scale residential and commercial projects. Nevena is an adjunct professor at University of Waterloo School of Architecture, where she has been a regular guest critic since graduating in 2005. Nevena tries not to take architecture too seriously, rather aim for her work to be as humorous as it is serious.
