Num castelo que alberga uma coleção extraordinária de tapeçarias antigas e após as Fleurs fantômes (Flores fantasma) de Gabriel Orozco, inspiradas nos papéis de parede dos quartos dos convidados da Princesa de Broglie, é mais do que natural confiar a Sheila Hicks, tão sensível aos sussurros das paredes, as tapeçarias e papéis de parede.
De facto, graças a ela, «a tapeçaria abandonou as paredes para se tornar uma obra de arte.»
Utiliza, com uma virtuosidade fenomenal, a matéria têxtil como um pintor usa os seus guaches.
Cada criação é uma viagem para ela, uma exploração que ela inicia com os maravilhosos volumes coloridos e gigantes novelos de lã ou de linho que a acompanham em permanência e com os quais inventa os seus universos infinitamente poéticos.
Instalações monumentais ou colagens delicadas e tecelagens de lã ou de linho fazem parte da mesma ciência da cor desta formidável artista, que conhece profundamente todas as práticas têxteis que teve a oportunidade de descobrir em todo o mundo durante as suas inúmeras viagens de descobertas.
 
Em 2018, para o seu 2.º ano de criação no Chaumont-sur-Loire, a artista intervém nos aposentos do Castelo com a utilização combinada de dois materiais: a lã e o papel, um papel espesso como a pele, como um eco dos papéis de parede antigos, das paredes e das almas pendentes nestes espaços que viram passar tantos convidados, vidas e fantasmas.
O papel, de seda, de bambu, de lã, como desenhos, interagirão com as paredes deterioradas, com os papéis de parede descolados e deixarão passar segredos, histórias escondidas, ressuscitarão histórias que permitirão voltar no tempo, encontrar cores do passado.
 
«Se refletiu exaustivamente sobre os espaços que deve ocupar, sobre os materiais que irá utilizar, sobre as cores com as quais irá pintar, é quando se depara com as divisões e o ambiente da sua instalação que entra verdadeiramente no ato de invenção. Fazendo então flechas de todo o tipo de madeira, utilizando todos os objetos, todos os elementos de arquitetura ou anfractuosidades de uma parede, irá seguir o seu instinto para construir uma cena onde se irão misturar o seu imaginário e o do espetador, agitando poeticamente a ordem preexistente. Ela sente, sabe o que deve ser, o que deve acontecer, movida pelo seu instinto e pela longa experiência de um olho absoluto. Da mesma forma que se fala de uma orelha absoluta, ela possui este olhar omnisciente, que percebe imediatamente o conjunto de uma cena e das suas potencialidades cromáticas.
Inspirando-se em quadros ou elementos da natureza, irá, assim, dar forma às ideias, às visões que atravessam o seu imaginário.
Com materiais invulgares, como tecidos muito densos com cores muito intensas nas caves do castelo e papéis preciosos nos aposentos do último andar, interage poeticamente com os espaços singulares do monumento.
É, desta forma, que nas caves do Castelo, cria impressionantes fundições vermelhas escuras, que irão teatralmente habitar o local e espalhar-se pelo chão, posicionadas «como um jogo de xadrez». Este espetacular «elevar de cortina» roxa confina, num magistral frente a frente, a verticalidade vigorosa das vigas de Jannis Kounellis.
Mas também inventa no «talho» vizinho, uma misteriosa queda ultramarina, dissimulando uma porta para um túnel imaginário, brincando com a luz dos assassinos, à qual chama de «saída secreta».
Mistura, no «refeitório», «entrelaçados» de fitas areia e ocre, que se infiltram na textura das pedras.
Sobre os telhados do castelo, nos antigos Aposentos dos Convidados, estende orgulhosamente os seus tecidos monocromáticos, como estandartes, anunciando o triunfo da cor. Também faz «cair o céu na chaminé». Sensível à subtileza dos tons, mistura o cinzento da parede antiga descoberta com preciosos papéis coreanos rosa pálido. Inventa uma «parede trémula» que vibra com a passagem dos visitantes, na divisão onde subsistem papéis de parede rasgados, eles próprios içados pelo movimento do tempo.
No quarto, que batizou de «assombração», misturou sabiamente tecidos esfarrapados, que parecem estar presentes desde sempre, abraçando levemente a abóbada e reforçando, desta forma, o mistério do local. 
Não perdendo nunca o fio condutor do seu pensamento e do rolo que segura nas suas mãos, lança, pelo chão e pelas paredes, tecidos e lãs de todo o tipo. Interage com a história e a arquitetura, criando ambientes, universos. Faz surgir ambientes em espaços que já inspiraram Sarkis e Gabriel Orozco, sensíveis, tal como ela, às almas suspensas, aos sinais impercetíveis vindos de outro século. 
Mas nenhuma das nuances ou das luzes lhe é estranha. Espalha, com alegria, a paleta da matéria e da cor.

Sheila Hicks (nascida em 1934 em Hastings, EUA) vive e trabalha em Paris desde 1964.
Proveniente da longa tradição da arte moderna que associa a abstração de várias outras disciplinas, a artista americana Sheila Hicks revisita a tradição têxtil artesanal popular, misturando as fronteiras entre a pintura e a escultura com as suas obras têxteis. Depois de ter tido como professor Josef Albers à Yale, começa a trabalhar a fibra por ocasião de uma viagem à América do Sul de 1958 a 1959, onde estuda as fábricas artesanais da Colômbia, do Chili, do Perú e da Bolívia. A fibra torna-se, em seguida, o principal material das suas obras. Sheila Hicks define o seu trabalho, alimentado pelas suas viagens e culturas que estudou, como um processo que tem como resultado uma verdadeira interação entre as suas obras e o espetador, bem como com a arquitetura na qual são apresentadas.
