"GLOSSOLALIA"

El cuarto pedido trienal de la Región Centro-Valle del Loira para el Dominio de Chaumont-sur-Loire (2017-2019) se ha confiado a Sheila Hicks.

En un castillo, que alberga una importante colección de tapicerías antiguas, jardines y obras de artistas mundialmente reconocidos como Andy Goldsworthy, y después de las “fleurs fantômes” de Gabriel Orozco inspiradas en los papeles pintados de las habitaciones de los Invitados de la Princesa de Broglie y las vidrieras de Sarkis, lo más natural era invitar a una artista que ha encumbrado un arte que recurre a todas las potencialidades que ofrecen las bellezas de la naturaleza.

Sheila Hicks utiliza con un fantástico virtuosismo el hilo, las fibras y sus colores, como un pintor usa sus pigmentos.

Para ella, cada creación es un viaje, una exploración que inicia con los maravillosos volúmenes coloreados y los cordajes monumentales en un amplio abanico de fibras naturales y sintéticas, que la acompañan permanentemente y con los que inventa sus universos infinitamente poéticos.

Instalaciones monumentales o delicados collages y tejidos de lana o de lino que forman parte de la misma ciencia del color de esta artista inmensa, que conoce profundamente todas las prácticas relacionadas con el hilo que pudo descubrir en los lugares más insólitos, en sus innumerables viajes de descubrimiento.

 

HACER DE UNA LÍNEA UNA OBRA

"Para mí, Chaumont-sur-Loire es un lugar aparte, como un refugio, un espacio donde tengo una gran libertad de creación.

La galería del Henil es un espacio totalmente fuera de lo común, cuya arquitectura me inspiró inmediatamente. En seguida se me ocurrió la idea de utilizar los abrevaderos de este establo donde se alimentaba a los terneros en la época de la Princesa de Broglie, como receptáculo de las bolas de pigmentos naturales acumuladas, ellas también alimento y base de las obras instaladas en las paredes y en el espacio.

Los "satélites" enganchados a las paredes son como constelaciones de un jardín interestelar e interplanetario.

El hormigón gris de esta galería, antiguo y patinado por el tiempo, permite un diálogo fecundo con los colores infinitos de las fibras.

En este Dominio, donde la naturaleza desempeña un importante papel, utilizo por primera vez elementos naturales, como las ramas, las ramitas, los haces de leña que se entremezclan con las cuerdas y los pigmentos. He querido unir la naturaleza con las fibras y los hilos que son lo propio de mi trabajo.

Estos elementos se asocian a un panel central tejido a mano, en Guatemala, como un rico paisaje formado por suntuosos colores primarios y a esta colada amarilla y oro, como una cascada celeste, que nos aporta paz.

La obra se titula “GLOSSOLALIA”, ‘glossolalie’, que es la expresión de una lengua misteriosa e incomprensible, como los signos que corren por los muros de la galería: sánscrito, estenografía... cada uno debe reconocer estos lenguajes reales o inventados, que quizá sean el lenguaje de los ángeles.

Si se encuentran algunos elementos habituales de mi vocabulario, lo que he creado en Chaumont-sur-Loire es único. Lo que siempre me ha inspirado es el rechazo de la repetición, el deseo de no volver a hacer lo que ya he creado. Deseo estar en la invención continua, y crear algo que no existe.

Una de las claves de esta sed de renovación permanente debe encontrarse en los universos contradictorios de mi infancia: el del “general store” que tenía mi abuelo materno en la ciudad, donde me enfrentaba al dilema constante de tener que elegir entre la multitud de objetos, y el de la granja de mi abuela paterna Ida, más sobria, donde había que inventarlo todo con nada, constantemente. Estas influencias opuestas son una de las claves de mi obsesión perpetua por la creación.

Me gusta crear colores que no existen en la naturaleza. Invento permanente nuevos descubrimientos. Así, estos satélites coloreados instalados en los muros proponen impactos y sorpresas.

Para mí, todos los colores pueden ir juntos. Esto depende de la cantidad de diferentes capas de materia, de la cantidad de luz y de la densidad de las sombras de las rayas de color, de los hilos de seda o de lino entrelazados, tensados, que confieren su presencia a las obras.

Del color nace una energía, una fuerza espiritual, un sentimiento de paz.

En 1964, Sheila Hicks decidió instalarse en París para vivir y fundar su taller. Nació en Nebraska en 1934, fue alumna de Josef Albers y George Kubler en la Yale School of Art and Architecture y gracias a los conocimientos adquiridos en sus viajes a América del Sur y a una estancia de cinco años en México, ha convertido su taller parisino, en el que se instaló, en el centro, siempre activo, de una obra abierta donde hilos y tejidos dan forma a un “lenguaje internacional” táctil, sensible e inmediato. Para ella, la creación es un proceso en movimiento, que se alimenta de encuentros y diálogos que la marcan, de culturas y de las técnicas estudiadas, de las arquitecturas aplicadas en sus instalaciones.

Desde los años 1960, Sheila Hicks elabora una obra que encuentra su punto de equilibrio en la intersección de las artes aplicadas y del arte contemporáneo. En 2016, participó especialmente en la 20ª Bienal de Sydney, en el Glasgow International Festival y en Weaving & We-2nd Triennial of Fiber Art de Hangzhou. El mismo año, el Joslyn Art Museum de Omaha (Nebraska) le dedicó una retrospectiva titulada Sheila Hicks: Material Voices. En Francia, expuso en 2014 en el Palais de Tokyo (París) y en el Consortium (Dijon). Fuera de Francia expuso en la 30ª Bienal de São Paulo en 2012, en la Bienal de Whitney (Nueva York) en 2014 y en la Hayward Gallery (Londres) en 2015.

Será la invitada de la Bienal de Venecia en 2017 y del Centre Pompidou en 2018.
