  • 2016-2017 Season: Trees in Winter

2016-2017 Art season:
Trees in Winter

19 November 2016 / 28 February 2017

Far from resting on its laurels this autumn, Domaine de Chaumont-sur-Loire will be welcoming five new artists between 19 November 2016 and 28 February 2017 as part of an exhibition entitled “Trees in Winter”.

The painter Stéphane Erouane Dumas invites us to contemplate sublime landscapes inspired by his travels in the countries of Northern Europe, while Alexandre Hollan’s drawings and paintings open our eyes to the secrets revealed in the vibrations of the trees he continues to question in his attempts to pierce the depths of their mystery.

Two photographers, Michael Lange from Germany with his extraordinary “Wald” series and Frenchman Denis Darzacq, also share with us the fascination that trees and forests hold for them whatever the season, with a preference for their ghostly winter shapes.

Added to the ensemble, a sculpture by Nicolas Alquin will resonate with works from Domaine de Chaumont-sur-Loire’s permanent collections by Melik Ohanian, Xavier Zimmermann, Manfred Menz, Hélène Schmitz and Jocelyne Alloucherie.

Winter visitors can also admire the Estate’s many permanent creations, including Gabriel Orozco’s “phantom flowers”, Sarkis’ stained-glass windows, Jannis Kounellis’ labyrinth of beams and bells, a “cairn” by Andy Goldsworthy, Gerda Steiner and Jörg Lenzlinger’s “Stones and Spring”, and “XiXe” and “Ugwu” by El Anatsui, along with works by Jeffrey Blondes, Mathieu Lehanneur, Tadashi Kawamata, Cornelia Konrads, Patrick Dougherty, Vincent Barré, Rainer Gross, Anne and Patrick Poirier, François Méchain, Nikolay Polissky, Dominique Bailly, Christian Lapie, Armin Schubert, Giuseppe Penone and Henrique Oliveira.

Whatever the season, Chaumont-sur-Loire is an open invitation to wander its many indoor galleries and encounter artists whose works resonate with landscape and architecture alike, and enter into poetic dialogue with the spirit of the place.
